EDGEFIELD, S.C.— Tim Hayes accepted the Energy for Wildlife Corporate Achievement Award on behalf of Duke Energy during the 34th annual National Wild Turkey Federation's National Convention and Sport Show, sponsored by Midway USA, in Nashville, Tenn.
Based in Charlotte, N.C., Duke Energy is a long-time supporter and sponsor of the NWTF and has been a member of the Energy for Wildlife Program since 2002.
"Duke Energy is very honored to accept this award from the NWTF, our dedicated partner," said Hayes, a senior scientist with Duke Energy. "We and the NWTF share a commitment to conservation and are looking forward to working with the Federation to complete more projects that will benefit wildlife in the future."
One of the largest electric power companies in the United States, Duke Energy supplies energy to approximately 4 million customers. The company has approximately 35,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity in the Midwest and the Carolinas, and natural gas distribution services in Ohio and Kentucky. In addition, Duke Energy has more than 4,000 megawatts of electric generation in Latin America.
Duke energy supports public access on company properties as well as land donations and funding to purchase public lands. The company also provides funding for numerous wildlife habitat projects in all their operating areas and manage all their properties for multiple uses.
The company provides excellent vegetation management programs for their rights of way, saving the company and its customers millions of dollars over the past few years. They work with the U.S. Forest Service on creating wildlife habitats in National Forests and partner with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the NWTF to improve wildlife habitat on private lands in the Hoosier State.
Duke Energy has been a significant partner on several North American Wetlands Conservation Act grants that have restored and opened up thousands of acres of wetland habitat and associated uplands and forests to public recreation," said NWTF Energy for Wildlife Program Coordinator Jay Jordan. "We are thrilled to recognize them for their hard work and dedication to the Energy for Wildlife program.
Energy for Wildlife is a membership-based certification program for all energy companies with the primary goal of enhancing wildlife habitat on company-managed, - owned or -influenced lands. These lands include power line and gas rights of way, plant sites, woodlands and other properties. Together, the Energy for Wildlife program's member companies manage approximately 3 million acres to benefit wild turkeys and other wildlife nationwide.
Any company involved in the production, transmission or distribution of energy is eligible to become a member of the Energy for Wildlife program.
